The holidays are a special time for everyone, but not everyone celebrates the holidays the same way. Here at HBC CPAs we celebrate the different ways the Christmas season brings family together, acts as an excuse to eat delicious food, and to exchange gifts with those we love. Here are some of our staff’s favorite Christmas traditions:

Rodney Jackson, CPA

On Christmas Day most years in the mid-70s after I was exhausted from the day’s excitement, I would crash on the floor with a pillow and blanket and watch “Scrooge the Musical” on WVVA in Bluefield, WV.  We only had one station, and they usually showed it on Christmas Day.  I make my wife and kids watch it with me on DVD every year, and of course they hate it!

Juan Garcia, CPA

I proposed to my beautiful wife on Christmas Eve. So of course, it’s the happiest day of my life. I remember hiding her engagement ring in the tree and as she and I picked up the discarded Christmas paper, boxes and ribbon, I walked over, got the ring, and asked her to marry me.

Growing up I thought I was the luckiest kid ever because our Christmas celebration lasted two full days.  I come from a large family (I’m the baby of 8 children), and we always had a house full of people.  My mom’s birthday is Christmas Eve, so we started our celebration with a fabulous Christmas Eve/birthday dinner, opened a few presents or our stocking gifts and went to midnight mass.  Then on Christmas morning, we would open the remainder of presents while we waited for our breakfast casserole to cook, then we would start preparing our Christmas Day meal.  We have continued some of these traditions with our children and do our best to make “Christmas” last as long as possible.

David B. Brown, CPA

When I was growing up, we always had two celebrations.  For my dad’s family, we would all go to our church’s Christmas Eve service, then we would go to either my grandmother’s, my uncle’s or my house to open presents and have snacks.  On Christmas day, my mother’s family would congregate at my grandparent’s house for lunch which consisted of country ham and all the fixings.  I’ll never forget the county ham as it was something my grandmother would order each year: it was a special dish to her knowing how much we all enjoyed it.   Since I have been married, my favorite memory is of my wife and I having cinnamon rolls together as we open our presents. So My Christmas is memories are all about family.

Whether your favorite Christmas memory is similar to one of ours or wonderfully different, here at HBC CPAs we want to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, from our family to yours.
